Kurt was born on September 9, 1890, into a Jewish family in Mogilno, Poland.

He was one of the four kids born in this middle-class family. In 1905, this family moved to Berlin and in 1909, Kurt enrolled at the University of Freidburg to study medicine.

However, he changed and attended the University of Munich so he could study biology. Here, he got involved with socialist movement and women’s right.
